The Encyclopedia of Biological Chemistry is a comprehensive
and authoritative study covering the field of
biochemistry. It includes over 500 articles on various
aspects of this subject, contained in four volumes.
Each article provides a focused description of the
given topic, intended to inform a broad range of
readers, ranging from students, to research professionals,
and interested others. Each article serves as
a comprehensive overview of a given area, providing
both breadth of coverage for students, and depth of
coverage for research professionals.
All articles in the encyclopedia are arranged alphabetically
by subject in the table of contents. The index
is located in volume 4. Article titles generally begin
with the key word or phrase indicating the topic.
Each article contains a glossary, cross-references
to other related encyclopedia articles, and further
readings and relevant websites for additional information.
The glossary contains terms that may be
unfamiliar to the reader, with each term defined in
the context of its use in that article. Thus, a term may
appear in the glossary for another article defined in a
slightly different manner or with a subtle nuance
specific to that article. For clarity, we have allowed
these differences in definition to remain so that each
article is fully understandable on its own.
Each article has been cross-referenced to other
related articles in the encyclopedia at the close of
each article. We encourage readers to use the crossreferences
to locate other encyclopedia articles that
will provide more detailed information about a
subject.
The further readings include recent secondary
sources to aid the reader in locating more detailed
or technical information. Review articles and research
articles that are considered of primary importance to
the understanding of a given subject area are also
listed. These suggested readings are not intended to
provide a full reference listing of all material covered
in the context of a given article, but are provided
as next steps for a reader looking for additional
information.
